Making safe waves in hazardous areas (16 March 2009)
As wireless devices such as mobile phones and laptop computers
become more reliable and cost effective, there is growing interest
amongst the process industry as to the benefits to be found from
enabling such devices to be used in hazardous areas. However,
unlike most industries this is not a simple task. Installing
wireless networks in hazardous areas requires careful, expert
planning and execution.

Wireless technologies take safety to a new level (02
December 2008)
The basic methods of mustering using manual paper, T card or
passive card/tag reader based systems have a major disadvantage.
They require the person to remember to sign or swipe in and out of
plant areas and it is time consuming to tally that all the
personnel that have assembled at the different muster points
equates to the number of people on the plant.

Evonik Degussa: A case study in explosion proof wireless networksAs
part of its continuous improvement initiative, Evonik Degussa Seal
Sands recognised the need to measure and improve the Overall
Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) of its critical equipment. Better
monitoring of equipment was an essential part of the drive to
enhance overall efficiency in the plant. Chris Steel, Continuous
Improvement Manager at Evonik Degussa Seal Sands, explains how
installing an explosion proof WLAN has enabled quick, efficient
assessment of OEE to be extended to the extreme environments and
Zone 1 hazardous areas found in its plant.
